Juan Castillo

Colored Pencil on Vellum

9 x 12 in

2017

The title of this work translates to “American” in Arabic. It is part of a series named, "All-American," which explores the boundaries and limitations of American identity. This specific work juxtaposes symbols of American ultra nationalism against that of Islamic fundamentalism, and asks the viewer to judge the resulting image for any harmony or disharmony. It is in this process of judgement that viewers can discern what this harmony, or lack thereof, means for what it means to be fully American and whether that's accessible to all people, and if so, under what conditions it applies.
