This piece is part of a triptych reflecting on my family’s life in South Dallas during the early 1990s. Inspired by my grandfather’s old black and white TV that sat in the kitchen, the boxy shape and muted screen reference that era and the setting of many of my childhood memories. The title screen, “Welcome to Struggleville,” plays off classic '70s television shows that often centered around suburban families living comfortably in affluent neighborhoods, where the kids' biggest problems were lighthearted adventures and mischief. In contrast, this work highlights the reality of how we grew up navigating hardship, resourcefulness, and resilience in a very different kind of neighborhood.
